Vancouver and Alaska - June 2011

A week in Vancouver, then a boat ride to Alaska. I had to call it a boat ride because I couldn't face the thought of a "cruise" after the "Cruise from Hell" in 2006.

5-29, Sunday, Fly to Seattle; take a bus to Vancouver.

5-30, Monday, Rainy. Tour Stanley Park and Vancouver by Hyundai Accent (nice car).

5-31, Tuesday, Car trip to Whistler ski area.

 Photo

Vancouver was a good
"jumping off" point.

 Photo

For a trip toShannon Falls.

 Photo

Pretty falls,

 Photo

and very scenic spot

 Photo

on our way to Whistler.

 Photo

Lots of young bears.

 Photo

Hungry bears

 Photo

on our way to

 Photo

Whistler Olympic Park,

 Photo

which was closed.

 Photo

We weren't upset.

 Photo

We came for the scenery.

 Photo

Saw another bear.

 Photo

Saw more awesome views.

 Photo

Explored as we like.

 Photo

And finally arrived.

 Photo

Whistler, just a ski village.

 Photo

Fabulous views coming back.

6-1, Wednesday, UBC Botanical Garden / Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden

The Japanese Garden at The Universisty of British Columbia was small and not so impressive as ones we have seen in Japan. But the UBC Botanicall Garden was so enjoyable and relaxing that we failed to take pictures.
The chineese garden was very well done, and had an excellent tour lead by a man who pointed out the many subtle Ying and Yang features in the garden.

 Photo

Every positon

 Photo

Has a good view.

 Photo

Looking down.

 Photo

Or looking up with modern
buildings in the background.

6-3, Friday, Grouse Mountain / Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge / Steamworks

 Photo

Only one way up.

 Photo

And on a foggy day

 Photo

probably the best view.

 Photo

Peak Chalet at the top

 Photo

is a ski center.

 Photo

The view wasn't spectacular.

 Photo

This is as good as it got.

 Photo

So we enjoyed the carvings.

 Photo

With a local guide.

 Photo

Truly beautiful.

 Photo

Saw some bears close up

 Photo

Just out of hybernation.

 Photo

A lumber jack competion

 Photo

complete with pole climbing

 Photo

and log rolling.

 Photo

Still this much snow in June.

 Photo

Which is why the
view was so dismal.

 Photo

So on to the next spot.

 Photo

Lynn Canyon.

 Photo

Over this gourge

 Photo

is a long suspension bridge.

 Photo

After a slow decline
from the bridge there
was a suprising 100ft.
climb back up.

 Photo

But the view is spectacular.

 Photo

The day ended at the
steamworks where we
saw a steam powered
clock and I enjoyed
some local-brewed beer.

 Photo

A stroll along the water

 Photo

ended a pleasant day.

6-4, Saturday, VanDusen Botanical Garden

 Photo

One of the most
beautiful gardens.

55 acres of spectacular
flora and a 200 meter

Looking forward to an adventure..

6-7, Tuesday, Icy Point Straits - Bears and Whales

 Photo

From Celebrity Cruises' excursion description,
"Imagine being in the midst of humpback whales as they feed and frolic in the bountiful waters of Icy Strait.
Then imagine overlooking a wild salmon stream, winding its way out amidst sedges and berry bushes,
and suddenly, a bear's head pops out of the grass".

 Photo

This is Century.

 Photo

Our only tendered port.

 Photo

Quaint village.

 Photo

Closest thing to a bear we saw.

 Photo

Whale as we saw them.

 Photo

Small even enlarged.

 Photo

Yes that is a tail.

 Photo

See, its a tail.

6-8,Wednesday, Hubbard Glacier

 Photo

Crowded on the bow deck,

 Photo

to see Hubbard Glacier.

 Photo

We saw ice flows,

 Photo

but no glacier.

6-9, Thursday, Juneau / Mendenhall Glacier / Zipline

 Photo

Sandy finally gets to hang on
a Moose like our
Moose hung on her.

 Photo

 Photo

31,000 residents.

 Photo

No roads in or out.

 Photo

In and out only by
boat or plane.

 Photo

End of the adventure..

6-10, Friday, Ketchican

 Photo

Cruise ships docking
spaces are full.
One has to pull out before
another one can pull in,

 Photo

Quaint village.

 Photo

A slice of gold-rush Alaska,
frozen in time.

.

 Photo

A great place to walk and talk.

 Photo

We are too early,

 Photo

but when the salmon
are running

 Photo

they go up these falls

 Photo

to spawn in this clear pool.

 Photo

It this the Ketchican can catcher?

 Photo

We think not.

 Photo

Totems are ever present.

 Photo

Was land expensive?

 Photo

Or was building
over water easier? .

 Photo

Maybe they liked catching
salmon off the front porch.

 Photo

Downtown Ketchican
overooks the docks..

 Photo

Cruise ships and tourists
are the main industry,.
